Jeffery S. Bland, PhD, FACN, CNS

Jeffrey S. Bland, Metagenics’ President and Chief Science Officer, has been an internationally recognized leader in the nutritional medicine field for over 30 years.  Headquartered in Gig Harbor, Washington, Dr. Bland founded HealthComm International, Inc. in 1984, and served as its Chief Executive Officer until the merger with its strategic partner, Metagenics, in 2000. As the principal visionary of HealthComm, Dr. Bland had already distinguished the company as a leader in the development of medical foods by the time of the merger. In 1992, he established the internationally respected Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) to train health practitioners globally in the application of nutritional and functional medicine.  He presently serves as Chairman of the Board for IFM.

Effie Poy Yew Chow, PhD, RN DiplAc - President, East West Academy of Healing Arts 

July 2000, Dr. Chow was appointed by President Clinton to the original 15 member White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy. Recipient of the “Visionary of the Year 1997” “The Humanitarian of the Year 1999” and “The Visionary of the Decade 2000” Awards, Dr. Effie Poy Yew Chow has for over thirty years been working to integrate Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with Western Medicine. Toward this goal, she founded the East West Academy of Healing Arts (EWAHA) in 1973 in San Francisco.

Michael H. Cohen, Esq.

Mr. Cohen was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and has been practicing law since 1986. Several years into his career as a corporate lawyer on Wall Street, he began developing expertise in health law with a focus on complementary medicine. He now has a general practice, with an emphasis on health law and consultative services in litigation. Mr. Cohen has been associated with prestigious international law firms (such as Davis Polk & Wardwell) and institutions (such as Harvard University), and brings his entrepreneurial spirit and sense of holism to facilitate pragmatic resolution to diverse legal and regulatory challenges.

Stephen Cowan, MD, JAc - Riverside Pediatrics

Dr. Cowan is a board-certified pediatrician and certified medical acupuncturist with more than 20 years of clinical experience working with children. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a member of the AAP Section on Child Development, a member of the Autism Research Institute's "Defeat Autism Now" (DAN) practitioners and a founding member of the Holistic Pediatric Association. He co-founded Riverside Pediatrics in Croton, New York and has a consultation practice in Holistic Pediatrics in Mt Kisco, NY. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pediatric problems such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Migraine, Tourette's syndrome, Asthma and Allergies. Understanding the child as an inter-related part of family and environment is the central focus of his practice. This approach respects the inseparability of mind, body and spirit and promotes a deeper understanding of what it means to be healthy.

Robert M. Duggan, M.A., M.Ac., a practitioner of acupuncture for more than 30 years, is President of Tai Sophia Institute, an accredited graduate school of the healing arts located in Laurel, Maryland. He received his Master’s Degree in Education from New York University in 1970, and holds degrees in Philosophy, Theology, Human Relations, and Community Organization. Joel M. Evans, MD 

Joel M. Evans, MD, a board certified OB/GYN, is the Founder and Director of The Center for Women’s Health, where he practices Integrative Obstetrics and Gynecology.  His recently published book on the holistic approach to pregnancy, The Whole Pregnancy Handbook (Gotham, 2005), has received widespread critical acclaim and media attention.

A frequent lecturer on Holistic Health Care, Dr. Evans is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was honored as a Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine, and recognized as the first physician in Connecticut to be Board Certified in both Holistic Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr Evans serves on the editorial advisory board of Bottom Line/Women’s Health and as a peer reviewer for Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine. He is a member of the senior faculty of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington D.C. and participated in the Mind-Body Medicine Mission to Macedonia, where he worked in United Nations Refugee Camps to help the Kosavar refugees heal their wounds of war.

Dr. Evans helped create a clinical study at Columbia University Medical Center on the use of the herb black cohosh in breast cancer, which was presented at the 2001 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists and later published in their journal. Dr. Evans utilizes a wide variety of complementary and alternative therapies in his own practice, which blends the best of modern medicine with the wisdom of traditional healing.

Nancy Gahles, DC, CCH, has been in family practice for over 24 years. Her practice is a holistic one combining herbs, nutrition, yoga and meditation along with structural correction for a variety of health issues. Dr. Gahles is the President of the National Center for Homeopathy (NCH) and chairs the committee for Homeopathy Today, the magazine of the NCH. She has authored articles on a variety of health issues that have responded favorably to homeopathic treatment. Jeremy R. Erminia “Mimi” Guarneri, M.D., FACC
Medical director and founder of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine

Board-certified in cardiology, internal medicine, nuclear medicine and holistic medicine, Dr. Guarneri is the founder and medical director of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Guarneri was an English Literature major as an undergraduate at New York University. Her medical degree is from SUNY Medical Center in New York where she graduated number one in her class.

Dr. Guarneri served her internship and residency at Cornell Medical Center, where she later became chief medical resident. She served cardiology fellowships at both New York University Medical Center and Scripps Clinic. Dr. Guarneri served as an attending in interventional cardiology at Scripps Clinic where she placed thousands of coronary stents. Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive and more holistic approach to cardiovascular disease she pioneered the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine where she uses state-of-the-art cardiac imaging technology and lifestyle change programs to aggressively diagnose, prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. She is a member of the American College of Cardiology, Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Medical Women’s Association, and a diplomat of the American Board of Holistic Medicine.

Dr. Guarneri has authored several articles that have appeared in professional journals such as the Journal of Echocardiography and the Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. Guarneri participated as a member of the writing committee for the American College of Cardiology Foundation Complementary Medicine Expert Consensus Document. This expert consensus statement on integrating complementary medicine into cardiovascular medicine was published in 2005. She is the author of The Heart Speaks, a poignant collection of stories from heart patients who have benefited from integrative medicine approaches. The Heart Speaks and her clinical work have been featured on the Today Show. She has been recognized for her national leadership in integrative medicine by the Bravewell Collaborative.

Bonnie J Horrigan, RMT, is the author of two books: Red Moon Passage (Harmony, 1996) and Voices of Integrative Medicine: Conversations and Encounters (Elsevier Science, 2003).  Her work has also appeared in Spirituality & Health; Science & Spirit; and Advances in Mind Body Medicine, among other magazines.  In 1995, she co-founded (with Larry Dossey, MD and Jeanne Achterberg, PhD) Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, a breakthrough medical journal examining alternative and cross-cultural healing practices and the relationship of the human spirit to health and healing.  She is currently editorial director for EXPLORE: The Journal of Science and Healing, a new medical journal that examines the healing arts, spirituality and consciousness, and ecological medicine.  Bonnie co-founded and serves as the Executive Director for the Society for Shamanic Practitioners, a non-profit organization dedicated to the assisting the re-emergence of spiritual healing in our culture.  A trained Reiki Master and long-time student of mysticism, she lives in San Diego, CA with her husband and son.

Rauni Prittinen King is the Co-Founder and Director of Programs and Planning at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in La Jolla, California.  She is the former Nurse Case Manager for the Scripps Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease.  Rauni has over 20 years of experience in critical care nursing.  In addition, she is a Certified Healing Touch practitioner and instructor, who has been coordinating Healing Touch workshops at Scripps Hospitals since 1993.  Rauni teaches Healing Touch, provides holistic consultations, writes about holistic health and integrative medicine, designs programs and gives presentations on Life Style Changes and Healing Environments in the USA, Canada and Europe.  Rauni received a BSN cum laude from Arizona State University.  She is Holistic Nurse Certified and certified in hypnotherapy.  She is a member of the American Holistic Nurses Association and Healing Touch International.

Nan Lu, OMD

Nan Lu, OMD, is the founding director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) World Foundation and its sister organization, the American Taoist Healing Center. He holds a doctorate from Hubei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hubei, China, and is a New York State-licensed acupuncturist. Dr. Lu is a master herbalist as well as a Taiji expert and Qigong master. He is also the best-selling author of three TCM books published by HarperCollins. Susan Luck RN, BS, MS, HNC, CCN, has worked in the field of nutrition and immunology for over 20 years. As a holistic nurse educator, medical anthropologist, and clinical nutritionist, she has been practicing nutrition in integrative healthcare models both in the U.S. and abroad.

She is a national speaker and founder and director of the Earthrose Institute, a foundation dedicated to educating women on nutrition, environmental health and breast cancer prevention. She is author of the Chapter on Nutrition for Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice.

David is President of Early-Edge Direction, a consultancy that works with innovators, entrepreneurs, and visionaries in health.  David brings to this position over 20 years of business experience working with executive teams and rapid growth companies.  He served as Senior Vice President for Hill and Knowlton and worked with Fortune 500 companies in public affairs, marketing communications, and issues management. He has been a prime architect in the startup of over a dozen organizations and companies.

Over the past ten years he has worked with early-stage companies and visionary organizations in the healthcare industry, primarily in the areas of natural products, bioelectric medicine, and complementary and alternative medicine. At Bastyr University, the country’s pre-eminent university for natural medicine, he served for eight years as the Director of Public Affairs and Executive Advisor to the President.  Today, he provides strategic business consulting to a variety of natural health sciences colleges and natural product companies, works with the boards and executive teams of four national professional organizations representing natural health practitioners, and is on several leadership teams striving to protect public choice and access to natural products.

William Meeker, DC, MPH
President, Palmer College - West

Principal investigator of the Consortial Center for Chiropractic Research. He has nearly two decades of experience in chiropractic and related areas of research, and for six years was the President of the Consortium for Chiropractic Research, advocating the development of chiropractic research infrastructure. Active in public health, he currently serves on the Governing Council of the American Public Health Association. His broad expertise in the research and health fields has also led to his present appointments in several functions; namely, Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research Consultant, American Chiropractic Association Research and Review Advisor, U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research Peer Review Panel Member, and U.S. National Institutes of Health Peer Review Consultant. 

He is one of 17 members appointed to the new National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, responsible for the review of grant applications that support biomedical research and research training activities for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Meeker is the Editor of the Journal of the Neuromusculoskeletal System and the Associate Editor of Advances in Chiropractic. He also serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, the Journal of Chiropractic Technique, and The Back Letter.

Joseph E. Pizzorno, Jr., N.D., appointed by President Clinton in December 2000 to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and by President Bush’ administration to the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee in November 2002, is one of the world’s leading authorities on science-based natural medicine. A physician, educator, researcher and expert spokesperson, Dr. Pizzorno is founding president of Bastyr University. In 1996, he was appointed to the Seattle/King County Board of Health and the founding board of directors of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia. Dr. Lawrence D. Rosen is a board-certified general pediatrician committed to family-centered, holistic child health care. He practices primary care in northern New Jersey and consults at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, serving as Chief of Pediatric Integrative Medicine and as medical advisor to the Deirdre Imus Environmental Center. In addition to writing numerous book chapters and magazine articles, he is coauthor of five books on Integrative and Nutritional Medicine: The New Breastfeeding Diet Plan (McGraw-Hill, 2006), Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child, 2nd Edition (Avery Publishing, 2003), A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health (Avery, 2002), Immunotics: A Revolutionary Way to Fight Infection, Beat Chronic Illness and Stay Well (Putnam, 2000), and A Parent’s Guide to Medical Emergencies (Avery, 1997). He is the medical editor for Delicious! Living and serves as a technical editor for Alternative and Complementary Therapies and Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association. A long-standing member of the adjunct faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine in Gig Harbor, WA, and a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild, he has lectured widely to professional audiences as well as the general public, and frequently appears on radio shows throughout the United States and Canada.

Craig Schneider, MD - Director of Integrative Medicine, Maine Medical Center

Dr. Schneider is a graduate of Harvard College and Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He is board certified in Family Medicine and received Fellowship training with Dr. Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona Program in Integrative Medicine. Currently Dr. Schneider serves as Director of Integrative Medicine and Assistant Residency Director in the Department of Family Medicine at Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME. He has led a National Centers for Complementary and Alternative Medicine educational grant to develop a model for training Family Medicine residents to understand and practice in a more integrative manner, that emphasizes wellness for practitioner and patient. Along with several Integrative Medicine education leaders around the nation, Dr. Schneider is piloting a combined four-year Integrative Family Medicine Residency/Fellowship training program with the support of the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation, Osteopathic Heritage Fund and the Weil Foundation. He is actively involved in clinical care, research, teaching, serves on the editorial boards of several integrative medicine journals and has published articles on topics relating to integrative medicine education, integrative clinical care and botanical medicine.

John Weeks is publisher-editor of the Integrator Blog News & Reports, a news and comment site that links the leadership of the diverse stakeholders with the various disciplines involved in the integration of natural healthcare and conventional practice. Weeks is a writer, organizer and consultant. His diverse work experience in integration includes: contractor for the National Institutes of Health and the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner; panelist for the White House Commission on CAM Policy; presenter for the American Hospital Association and the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine; and service as a resource for the US Institute of Medicine, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Newsweek, Modern Health Care and others. Weeks co-convened the Integrative Medicine Industry Leadership Summits (2000-2002), co-founded and directed the National Education Dialogue to Advance Integrated Health Care, and currently serves as executive director of the Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Health Care.
